Dr. Shiva S Tripathi is a Consultant Anaesthetist with a special interest in the management of chronic pain. He has been working since 2007 as a whole-time consultant in this capacity at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is the Clinical Director of pain management and the clinical lead for Neuromodulation services at this Trust dealing with all aspects of acute and chronic pain in the Trust. He leads a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of pain consultants, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists and psychologists, which takes on approximately 2000 new patients per annum. Dr Tripathi is the chief investigator in the UK, of a first in human trial in management of low back pain. He is the principal investigator of a number of research studies. Dr Tripathi is a fellow of Royal College of Anaesthetists and faculty of pain medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He is also a member of the North West Regional pain group. Dr Tripathi is a consultant research fellow and the lead for pain research at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. He is also a member of the Anaesthetic Research Society (ARS) and Society for Back Pain Research (SBPR). He has been recently appointed as the NIHR North West Coastal research network lead for Anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine and pain management.
Within the in-patient and out-patient setting, Dr Tripathi sees a wide variety of pain conditions and is responsible for assessment, diagnosis and management of approximately 300-400 new patients per annum. His usual clinical case load includes: complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), musculoskeletal pain syndrome , fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, whiplash associated disorder (WAD), complex headaches, cancer related pain , failed back surgery syndrome(FBSS), neuropathic pain and post-surgical pain management.
Dr Tripathi’s area of clinical interest in acute and chronic pain includes: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), radiofrequency ablation for spinal and non-spinal pain syndromes, persistent-post surgical pain, occupational injury related pain syndrome and application of spinal cord stimulator for various pain conditions.
